Gendarm Path

The hiking trail is considered one of the most scenically attractive in Denmark, as it runs close to the coast. Along the route, hikers will find historical monuments, varied landscapes, and beautiful viewpoints.

The Gendarm Path is an approximately 84-kilometer-long hiking trail in South Jutland, Denmark. It runs from Padborg in the west to Høruphav in the east, mostly along the Flensburg Fjord.

History

The Gendarm Path is named after the Danish border gendarmerie, which guarded the border between Denmark and Germany from 1920 to 1958. The gendarmes used the path for their foot patrols. In 1988, the old path was rediscovered as a tourist attraction and was equipped with signs and information boards.

Route and Stages

The entire hiking route is 84 kilometers long and is divided into five daily stages:

  1. Padborg – Sønderhav
  2. Sønderhav – Brunsnæs
  3. Brunsnæs – Gammelmark
  4. Gammelmark – Høruphav
  5. Høruphav – Skovby

The route passes through various towns and by landmarks such as Sønderborg Castle and the Dybbøl Redoubts.

Hiking experience

The popular hiking trail offers a varied hike through different landscapes. Hikers report charming coastal sections, fields of rapeseed in spring, and secluded beach areas. The path is well-marked and suitable for beginners. Along the route, there are 28 resting spots.
