Typical Denmark
Other countries, different customs.
Gas bottles
Camping gas cylinders are readily available in Denmark, but there are some important tips on types, fillings and exchange options:
- Foreign gas cylinders cannot usually be exchanged.
- Danish bottles have different connections – adapters are often necessary.
You can only refill your own bottles at a few places (e.g. specialist retailers or petrol stations).
We therefore recommend that you buy an adapter for Danish cylinders, e.g. Kosan Gas to GOK DIN. If you are staying longer, it is best to buy a Danish gas cylinder and use an adapter.
Open on Sundays
Most shops in the Scandinavian countries are also open on Sundays.
Traffic rules
There are no tolls on Danish roads – only on certain bridges such as the Storebælt or Øresund bridges.
Speedlimits
- 50 km/h in urban areas
- 80 km/h out of town
130 km/h motorway (partly 110)
Lights are compulsory in Denmark. So please switch on your daytime running lights.
This also applies to the other Scandinavian countries.
Alcohol limit: 0.5 per mille
Currency & Payment
In Denmark you pay with Danish kroner (DKK).
Current exchange rate.
Card payment is common everywhere, even at small kiosks or toilets. Cash is being used less and less. EC/credit cards and MobilePay are standard.
Fishing in Denmark
Whether from the beach or by boat – fishing is great here in Vemmingbund Bay!
Important! If you want to fish in Denmark, you need a state fishing licence (Fisketegn). You can apply for this licence online here.
Campfire and barbecue
Campfires only at official fireplaces, with distance and extinguishing agents.
Barbecues are permitted as long as there is no fire ban – always follow local advice.
Travelling with dogs
Dogs are always welcome – but must be kept on a lead in towns and forests. Dogs must also be kept on a lead on beaches from 1 April to 30 September.
Dogs are not allowed in our rental accommodation.
What is ‘hygge’?
What exactly is this ‘hygge’?
‘Hygge’ (pronounced “hüggä”) is a typical Danish attitude to life – difficult to translate directly, but it roughly means: cosiness, security and consciously enjoying simple moments.
Typical hygge examples:
- Drinking tea by candlelight in the evening
- A campfire on the beach
- Shared moments with friends or family
- Lying on the sofa with a good book and a cosy blanket
- Enjoy home-baked bread or cinnamon buns
Food culture
The Danes have a well-known dish that simply belongs to them:
- Smørrebrød: topped rye bread, skilfully layered.
- Hotdog: an integral part of snack culture. No holiday in Denmark without a hotdog!
- Liquorice: often salty, sometimes spicy and very popular.
- Kanelsnegl: Cinnamon bun – fluffy, sweet and a favourite with coffee.
- Risalamande: Rice pudding with cream and chopped almonds.
Risalamande is traditionally eaten at Christmas in Denmark. Whoever finds the almond receives a gift: ‘Mandelgave’ (‘almond gift’)
"You" in a more familiar way
In Denmark we say ‘you’ in a more familiar way. Polite behaviour counts for more than titles or distance.
A more formal ‘You’ (in Danish “de”) is only used in formal situations, e.g. when speaking to the royal family.
Dannebrog
The Danish flag is called ‘Dannebrog’. It plays a central role in Danish culture. It is not uncommon to see the red and white flag flying in Danish gardens.
However, there are certain rules!
The large flag is only raised on birthdays and public holidays. It may remain flying from sunrise to sunset. It may not fly at night.
The pennant can be used day and night if there is no specific occasion.
