Sønderborg

The town of Sønderborg is beautifully situated on the Flensburg Fjord and offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and maritime charm. This charming town in South Jutland is ideal for a day trip.

Sønderborg Castle: Situated directly by the water, the Renaissance castle in Sønderborg impresses with its architecture and the fascinating museum about the history of South Jutland – including the events surrounding the Danish-German War of 1864.

The harbour and promenade: A walk along the harbour promenade is worth it: cafés, restaurants, small shops, and the view of the water invite you to relax – especially at sunset, it’s a highlight.

Als Island (Alsen): The island of Als, where Sønderborg is located, offers great opportunities for cycling, hiking, and swimming. Especially beautiful are the natural beach at Vemmingbund and the forest area of Nørreskoven.

Sønderborg Cultural Centre Alsion: Here, culture and modern architecture come together. Concerts, exhibitions, and events provide a varied program throughout the year.

Program and Opening Hours

The Dybbøl Banke near Sønderborg in Denmark are a significant historical battlefield. In 1864, the decisive battle of the Danish-German War took place here, where Prussian troops stormed the Danish fortifications. The well-preserved redoubts are now part of an open-air museum, providing a striking insight into 19th-century warfare.

Right next to it stands the Dybbøl Mill – a symbol of reconstruction and peace. The historic windmill has been destroyed several times and faithfully rebuilt. It vividly illustrates rural life from that era.

A modern visitor centre completes the experience: Here, historical exhibits are displayed, and an impressive film vividly conveys the events of 1864.

Boundary Stones: Along the path, you will find 280 numbered boundary stones that have marked the border between Denmark and Germany since 1920. The first 49 of these stones are located along the Gendarm Path.

St. Mary’s Church (Sankt Marie Kirke): An impressive brick church from the 16th century in Sønderborg. Information and events.

Ulkebøl Church: A typical Danish church with historic altarpieces from the early 16th century. More information.

Ringrider Statue: A monument near Sønderborg Castle that commemorates the traditional ring rider competitions. The traditional festival still takes place today. The lively event occurs every year on the 2nd weekend in July, from Friday to Monday, in Sønderborg. More information.

Museum Oldemorstoft: A local and border museum in Padborg dedicated to the history of South Jutland. It offers exhibitions on the history of the border region, agriculture, and border protection.

Sønderborg Castle: An impressive red brick castle in Sønderborg that now houses a museum dedicated to the history and art of South Jutland. The castle chapel is particularly worth seeing.

Dybbøl Banke: A former battlefield from the Danish-German War of 1864. Here, you will find the “Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke,” which provides insights into the life of the soldiers and the weaponry of the time. The Dybbøl Mill is also connected to this site.

Aabenraa:

The Danish town of Aabenraa is idyllically located on a deeply indented fjord and has a long history of seafaring and shipbuilding.

The charming old town with cobbled streets, old merchant courtyards, and intricately carved doorways invites you to stroll around.

The vibrant marina, cosy cafés right by the water, and the fine sandy city beach make Aabenraa a popular destination, especially in summer. The Brundlund Castle Art Museum and the beautiful park surrounding the castle are also worth a visit.

Near Aabenraa lies Krusmølle – a real hidden gem for a cosy atmosphere, Danish design, and homemade treats.

In the former water mill, you will find a lovingly designed farm shop with Danish handicrafts, Scandinavian décor, and culinary specialties.

the cosy café, you can enjoy homemade cakes, delicious bread specialties, and freshly brewed coffee – the traditional Danish breakfast is especially popular.

Throughout the year, creative workshops, exhibitions, and seasonal events take place on the grounds – including the atmospheric Christmas market, which attracts visitors from all over South Jutland.

Gråsten Castle

Gråsten Castle is beautifully situated in the small town of Gråsten, not far from Sønderborg. Surrounded by an idyllic castle garden and a small lake, it serves as the summer residence of the Danish royal family.

While the royal family resides in the castle, the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place regularly – a real highlight for visitors. The beautiful castle park is freely accessible outside of the royal family’s stay and invites visitors to enjoy a relaxing walk.

Augustenborg Castle

Augustenborg Castle is located in the town of the same name on the island of Als and is one of Denmark’s most significant Baroque castles.

This castle was once the residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sønderborg-Augustenborg and played an important role in Danish-German history.

Today, the castle houses parts of the Danish health administration, but the idyllic castle park and the castle church are freely accessible to visitors. Particularly worth seeing: the Baroque architecture and the view over the Augustenborg Fjord.

Nordborg Castle

Nordborg Castle is located in the north of the island of Als and is one of the oldest castles in Denmark. It was originally built as a fortress in the 12th century and has been renovated several times since.

For centuries, the castle played an important role in the regional history, serving as the residence of noble families and as a royal fief.

Today, the historic building houses a grammar school, but it is easily viewable from the outside. The walk around the castle, with a view of Nordborg Lake, is particularly charming – a lovely spot for a break with a historic atmosphere.

Fåborg

Day trip to Funen. The Fynshav–Bøjden ferry will take you to the island in just 50 minutes.
